  • Workshop Overview

This free live workshop introduces Cyclops, a GPU-accelerated environmental analysis tool developed by Foster + Partners. Led by members of the firm’s Applied Research + Development (ARD) team, the session demonstrates how near–real-time simulation of solar obstruction, daylight autonomy, and cumulative radiation can be integrated directly into architectural and urban design workflows. Through practical demonstrations and case-based examples, attendees will learn scalable, performance-driven methodologies for evaluating environmental impact at façade, building, and city scales—enabling faster, more informed design decisions at early project stages.

  • Workshop Curriculum

    • Introduction to Cyclops and GPU-based environmental simulation
    • Overview of GPU-accelerated ray tracing for environmental analysis
    • Setting up Cyclops workflows in Rhino & Grasshopper
    • Solar obstruction analysis at façade, building, and urban scales
    • Daylight autonomy analysis using near–real-time feedback
    • Cumulative solar radiation analysis for performance-driven design
    • Interpreting results and integrating performance data into design iteration
    • Scaling workflows from individual buildings to city contexts
    • Case study walkthroughs from Foster + Partners
    • Best practices, limitations, and common pitfalls
    • Live Q&A with the ARD team
  • Entry Requirements

    • Intermediate proficiency in Grasshopper
    • Working knowledge of Rhino 3D (Rhino 7 or 8)
    • Windows-based system (Cyclops is Windows-only)
    • NVIDIA GPU with Compute Capability 5.0 (Maxwell) or higher
    • NVIDIA graphics driver version 536.25 or later

A Workshop By:
Oscar Borgstrom and Wojciech Karnowka

Oscar Borgstrom - Oscar is part of the Applied Research + Development team at Foster + Partners, where he develops computational tools that underpin performance-driven design workflows. His work includes solutions for view analysis, environmental simulations, rendering, and artificial lighting.

With a degree in Architecture and Engineering from Chalmers University of Technology, Gothenburg, Sweden, Oscar has contributed to advancing the AEC industry in areas like geometry processing, digital fabrication, optimization, and software interoperability.

Wojciech Karnowka - Wojciech has more than 5 years of experience developing tools and pipelines to address complex issues in architectural projects around the world. Since joining Foster + Partners in 2023, he has been developing bespoke performance-driven design products and contributing to some of the iconic projects the practice is currently undertaking.

As part of the Applied Research + Development team, Wojciech creates computational solutions in complex geometry, digital workflows, and performance-driven design. His expertise ranges from early-stage evaluations to implementing advanced workflow automation at scale.

Wojciech holds a degree in Architecture from The Bartlett School of Architecture at University College London. His work is driven by experimental methodologies and a commitment to developing strategies for evaluation, representation, and generation in the AEC industry.‍

About the Workshop

Advancements in GPU-accelerated ray tracing are transforming how environmental performance can be evaluated during design. Analyses that were once slow and disconnected from early decision-making can now be integrated directly into iterative workflows, enabling environmental performance to actively inform design in near real time.

This free live workshop introduces Cyclops, a GPU-based environmental analysis tool developed by Foster + Partners. Led by members of the firm’s Applied Research + Development (ARD) team, the session demonstrates scalable workflows for analysing solar obstruction, daylight autonomy, and cumulative radiation at façade, building, and urban-context scales.

Participants will gain an understanding of the principles behind GPU-accelerated environmental simulation and see how Cyclops leverages modern graphics hardware to significantly outperform traditional CPU-based tools. Through practical demonstrations and practice-based case studies, the workshop shows how near–real-time feedback can be embedded directly into Rhino and Grasshopper workflows to support performance-driven design.

By the end of the session, attendees will have a clear understanding of how GPU-accelerated environmental analysis can be deployed within architectural, urban, and research workflows—enabling faster, more informed decisions at critical stages of the design process.
