Ross is an architect and founder of Initiate, a Bridgend-based heritage and re-use studio. In 2021, he left his corporate role at an international practice to launch Initiate, focused on bringing new life, light and joy to historic buildings. By sharing this journey online, Initiate has grown a significant following as a place to connect with fellow designers, share ideas and challenges, market services and diversify revenue streams. 5 years on, Initiate are a team of three, ranking in the Top 10 of Beedier’s league of the most popular UK architecture practices on social media, and winners of Archiboo's Best Use of Social Media Award.
Ross Hartland shares how he built Initiate, a small practice in South Wales focused on bringing new life, light and joy to old buildings through conservation, retrofit and adaptive reuse. Speaking from the perspective of a small studio owner, he reflects on leaving corporate practice, the uncertainty of starting alone during 2020, and the challenge of building both a business and a creative life on his own terms.
He explains how social media became more than promotion. By sharing the real process of running a practice, from fees and workflows to failures and day-to-day realities, he built a wider audience, stronger professional connections, and new client leads. The talk shows how openness, consistency and authenticity can help a small practice grow its influence, diversify income, and create opportunities far beyond its size.
