Carlos is a building science expert andKPF’s Head of Sustainability, where he leads the firm’s in-house BuildingSimulation team, KPF-EP, closely collaborating with design teams across thefirm’s global network. His work focuses on coordinating firm-widesustainability initiatives and developing new environmental analysis tools fordesign. He has led the design for a carbon neutral ready campus in Guangzhou,an all-electric laboratory in NYC, a climate resilient district in Boston, andsome of KPF’s largest adaptive reuse projects. He has contributed to numerousresearch publications, including Energy and Buildings, Building and Environmentand JBPS, and has been a guest lecturer at MIT’s Center for Real Estate (MITCRE) since 2022. He regularly presents at AIA, Greenbuild, ASHRAE and IBPSAconferences. He co-chairs the AIA NY Decarbonization sub-committee, serves atthe Waterfront Alliance council, and the NYC Energy Conservation Code AdvisoryGroup, and collaborates with ULI’s Randal Lewis Center for Sustainable RealEstate.

Before joining KPF, Carlos worked as aResearch Scientist and Instructor at MIT’s Sustainable Design Lab,collaborating with municipalities including Boston, Lisbon, and Kuwait to modeland analyze building energy use patterns at an urban scale. Carlos is alicensed architect by the University of Seville (Spain, 2010), having practicedin Spain, Japan, and the United States. He also holds a master’s from HarvardUniversity (2013) and a PhD from MIT (2017).

About the Talk
Confidence at Scale

In this talk, Carlos explores how data, simulation, and AI can help architects respond to climate change at the speed and scale now required. Drawing on KPF’s work in sustainability and building science, he shows how digital tools can be used not just to analyse performance, but to reduce uncertainty, support better decisions, and help clients commit to more ambitious design strategies earlier in the process. Through examples from projects and urban research, the talk also considers how AI can widen access to expertise, simplify complex analysis, and scale environmental thinking from individual buildings to entire cities.
